Using SPAM Filters

Print

SPAM is the term used for unsolicited or junk email

The use of various SPAM blockers or filters is still fairly popular with people.  These are features of McAfee and Norton products.  However all this does in reality is redirect emails the filter tries to guess is SPAM into a Junk Mail folder.

This means that you will have to remember to look through your Junk Mail folder as well as your Inbox for any mail.

Some folks create rules by making a blacklist (email addresses to reject) and a whitelist (email addresses to positively accept)  However this can significantly reduce the performance of your email programme.  So we do not recommend this.

The problem is that most SPAM comes from randomly generated email addresses for each individual message.  This means your blacklist can quickly build up to thousands of addresses - and all these addresses are checked through before each of your emails are collected.

So what can I do about SPAM?

Whilst filters can sometimes be useful for large amounts of SPAM it would obvioulsy be much better to prevent getting SPAM in the first instance.
